The Gakko ("we", "us", "our") operates the website at thegakko.com and its associated Chrome extensions. We provide AI-powered language lesson creation and review tools for teachers and students.

Account Information

• Email address and display name (when you sign up)
• Role (teacher or student)
• Authentication credentials (managed by our authentication provider)

Lesson Data (Teachers)

• Lesson content you create or generate with AI
• Images generated for lessons

Recording Data (Students)

• Audio recordings of language lessons captured via the Chrome Extension
• Transcripts generated from those recordings
• Speaker labels and language detection data

Audio is processed in real-time and is not stored on our servers. Only the resulting text transcripts are saved to your account.

Usage Data

• Bookmarked lessons and review history
• AI-generated review materials and quiz results

• Provide and improve our language learning services
• Generate personalized review materials using AI
• Send lesson review emails (if you opt in)
• Analyze aggregated, anonymized usage patterns to improve content

We do not sell your personal data.

To operate The Gakko, we rely on a small number of trusted third-party processors. These fall into the following categories:

• Authentication and database hosting — to manage your account and store your data securely
• AI content and review generation — to generate lesson materials and review questions
• Speech-to-text transcription — to convert lesson audio into text (Chrome Extension)
• Transactional email delivery — to send account and review emails
• Website analytics — to understand aggregate usage (with cookie consent)
• Website hosting — to serve thegakko.com

Each provider processes data only as needed to perform its service and according to its own privacy policy. Transcript audio sent to our speech-to-text provider is used solely for transcription and is not retained for model training. We will provide the names of specific processors on request.

We use essential cookies for authentication and session management. These are strictly necessary for the service to function.

We use a third-party analytics service to understand how visitors use our site (page views, traffic sources, user flows). Analytics cookies are only loaded after you accept our cookie notice. You can opt out by declining cookies or using a browser-level analytics opt-out extension.

We do not use advertising cookies.

• Account data is retained while your account is active
• Lesson and transcript data is retained while your account is active
• When you delete your account, all associated data is permanently deleted

You have the right to:

• Access your data — view all data in your dashboard
• Delete your account and all associated data from your account settings
• Export your data (coming soon)
• Opt out of review emails at any time

The Gakko publishes multiple Chrome extensions. Each has its own permissions and data handling, described below.

The Gakko (Lesson Recorder)

Requests the following permissions:

• Tab Capture — to record audio from your current browser tab (Google Meet, Zoom, etc.)
• Storage — to store your authentication session locally

The extension only captures audio when you explicitly start a recording. Audio is processed locally and sent to a third-party speech-to-text provider for transcription. Raw audio is not stored on our servers.

The Gakko - Clip

Requests the following permissions:

• Storage — to save captured phrases locally in your browser and remember your preferred language pair
• Active Tab — to read caption text from the YouTube tab you're currently viewing
• Scripting — to relay capture requests from the service worker to the YouTube tab
• Host access to youtube.com — to read caption DOM on YouTube watch pages

All captured phrases are stored locally in your browser and never transmitted to any server. Translations are performed on-device using Chrome's built-in on-device AI; caption text never leaves your browser. You may export your saved phrases as CSV at any time; export happens entirely client-side.

The Gakko - Clip does not require authentication and is not linked to any thegakko.com account.

The Gakko is not directed at children under 13. If you are under 13, please do not create an account.

We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify registered users of material changes via email.
